In a completed installa tion, each outlet box shall be provided with a cover unless covered by means of a luminaire canopy, lampholder, recepta cle, or similar device. If the ceiling height is adequate to allow a luminaire to be installed above the 8 foot zone, the luminaire must be listed for damp locations; if subject to shower spray, the luminaire must be listed for wet locations. These are the 10 NEC Article 410 items we deem most important, based on the pervasiveness of confusion and the potential costs of same. Wet and Damp Locations. Depending on the type of lighting used, whether incandescent, fluorescent, or LED, surface-mounted or flush-mounted, this section lists clearances to the nearest storage space. All luminaires, lampholders, and retrofit kits shall be listed. Temperature. As we all know, heat rises, and a heat pocket is created within each fixture. Lampholders installed over highly combustible material shall be of the unswitched type. Normally, luminaires (fixtures) cannot be used as raceways. III. They look the same in size and design, especially during construction. 3: Where no equipment grounding conductor exists at the outlet, replacement luminaires that are GFCI protected shall not be required to be connected to an equipment grounding conductor. Accessible. This type of luminaire (fixture) must comply with Sections 410.65 through 410-72. Parts of the luminaire exposed within the hood shall be corrosion resistant or protected against corrosion, and the surface shall be smooth so as not to collect deposits and to facilitate cleaning. Lighting track shall be securely mounted so that each fastening is suitable for supporting the maximum weight of luminaires that can be installed. Direct-Current Equipment. Lamp Terminals and Lampholders. These poles are likely to be touched by the general public, and if a fault occurs a person could be seriously injured or killed. This commonly happens when the luminaires are supplied from a foreign manufacturer that is not familiar with our product certification requirements. Equipped with Flanged Surface Inlet. 410.40 General. The NEC specifies a few requirements for outlet boxes, inspection, suspended ceilings, luminaire (fixture) studs, insulating joints, raceway fittings, busways, and trees. According to the NEC 410.16(A), the following is defined as acceptable for installation in clothing closets: Surface or recessed incandescent or LED luminaires with an enclosed light source. Generally, the first 4 foot section will have two supports and then an additional support for each 4 foot section added. General II. Items such as marking for electrical ratings and warnings for combustibles, conductor and cord usage, and connections are covered. Secondary circuit outputs shall not be connected in parallel or in series. Part X. This is usually not an issue on 6 or 7 inch recessed cans, as they are typically IC rated and easily checked. Lampholders installed in wet locations shall be listed for use in wet locations. Insulating Joints. Exception No. Recessed luminaires (fixtures) can be installed in the wall or ceiling. Provided with Mogul-Base, Screw Shell Lampholders. This often leads to problems, such as when we have special luminaires used inside casinos, hotels and other large facilities where the units are actually a piece of artwork with lights attached. (B) Metal or Nonmetallic Poles Supporting Luminaires (Lighting Fixtures). The purpose of the NEC is to provide electrical installation requirements that protect persons and property from electrical hazards arising from the use of electricity. General. Equipment schedules are important, and one should ask for an equipment schedule during the plan review process, to make sure of what is taking place inside the extraction room and also the surrounding areas. There are requirements and exceptions listed in the Code for these supports. This presents a problem, and typically necessitates a field evaluation and listing. More times than not, these custom one-of-a-kind units are not typically listed and labeled by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). So, we have to picture the cube directly over the tub or shower, extending 3 feet out from the edge and 8 foot above the unit. Branch-circuit conductors that have an insulation suitable for the temperature encountered shall be permitted to terminate in the luminaire. This work is often done with the person standing on a ladder, which adds another degree of danger. Multiwire Branch Circuits. Luminaires that have exposed ballasts, transformers, LED drivers, or power supplies shall be installed such that ballasts, transformers, LED drivers, or power supplies shall not be in contact with combustible material unless listed for such condition. D2(a) Optional Calculation for One-Family Dwelling Heating Larger than Air Conditioning [See Section 220.82], Example No. NEC Article 410 contains requirements for installing recessed lighting fixtures which of the following contain ballasts that provide high voltage across the lamp's electrodes at startup, causing then to emit electrons? For existing installed lumin aires without disconnecting means, at the time a ballast is replaced, a disconnecting means shall be installed. One category that is a fairly new concern is indoor sports, mixed use and all-purpose facilities that may utilize mercury vapor or metal halide lamps. Auxiliary equipment for electric-discharge lamps shall be enclosed in noncombustible cases and treated as sources of heat. a. Location. (A) Wet and Damp Locations. The term luminaires is recommended by the International Electrotechnical Commission. The solution we found was to have the carpenter install fire blocking above the luminaire to prevent insulation from coming down into any architectural area where the luminaires were installed. The connected load on lighting track shall not exceed the rating of the track. Luminaires in Indoor Sports, Mixed-Use, and All-Purpose Facilities. In indoor locations other than dwellings and associated accessory structures, fluorescent luminaires that utilize double-ended lamps and contain ballast(s) that can be serviced in place shall have a disconnecting means either inter nal or external to each luminaire. The track conductors shall be a minimum 12 AWG or equal and shall be copper. Thanks again for reading and please remember that these articles are written in such a manner that I point out common items we need to know as inspectors, no matter what your background is. The National Electrical Code (NEC), or NFPA 70, is a regionally adoptable standard for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment in the United States. Luminaires shall be constructed such that adjacent combustible material is not subject to tempera tures in excess of 90C (194F). Where supplied by a circuit having a grounded conductor, the grounded conductor shall be connected to the screw shell. A luminaire that weighs more than 3 kg (6 lb) or exceeds 400 mm (16 in.) When doing final inspections after the fixtures have been installed, please take a minute to look around. Recessed parts of a luminaire (fixture) that is not identified for contact with insulation must be at least 13 mm ( in.) An incandescent lamp for general use on lighting branch circuits shall not be equip ped with a medium base if rated over 300 watts, or with a mogul base if rated over 1500 watts. You cannot have any part of a suspended fixture (i.e., the cord, pendant chain, etc.) If they were installed in a ceiling, we had the installer frame a box out around the fixtures to maintain the required 3 inch clearance from insulation. Many of the items have been created directly as a result of disaster conditions through history. Trees. Exit Luminaires. However, the only requirements for luminarie installations in closets appear in section 410.16, which specifically addresses luminaires in clothes closets. This becomes a challenge because insulation has the tendency to go everywhere if it is blown in; or if it is batt insulation, it may eventually fall onto a fixture. Since the closet doors are generally closed, if the fixture is left on and overheats items in the closet, the resulting fire could go unnoticed for quite some time. Suspended Ceilings. Chapter 4 of the National Electrical Code (NEC), Equipment for General Use, contains 22 articles. Luminaires shall be of such construction or installed so that the conductors in outlet boxes shall not be subjected to temperatures greater than that for which the conductors are rated.Branch-circuit wiring, other than 2-wire or multiwire branch circuits supplying power to luminaires connected together, shall not be passed through an outlet box that is an integral part of a luminaire unless the luminaire is identified for through-wiring.Informational Note: See 410.64(C) for wiring supplying power to luminaires connected together. The installation requirements for motor control centers are covered in 110.26 (F), and air-conditioning and refrigerating equipment are covered in Article 440. Since most poles are metallic, you absolutely have to make this inspection to insure they are grounded. The housing for the lighting track system shall be of substantial construction to maintain rigidity. You probably guessedit is the last item in Article 410, and it states that holiday lighting shall be in accordance with Article 590.3(B). In addition to the provisions of 410.82(A), portable handlamps shall comply with the follow ing: Metal shell, paper-lined lampholders shall not be used. 410.110 General. Surface-mounted or recessed incandescent or fluorescent fixtures are permitted. All wiring must be in rigid conduit or threaded steel intermediate metal conduit and will need to have seal fittings installed per 501.15 (A). (D) Location. This requirement provides a safe method to service the ballast, and continues to be extended in its enforcement, adding that in existing installations the disconnecting means shall be added when ballast replacement is performed. Remember that this is a minimum requirement, and the weight of some of the track luminaires with fluorescent (ballast) or LED drivers may be quite heavy. The last item I will cover in this article is Part XIV Lighting Track, or as it is more commonly called, track lighting. Listed clips identified for use with the type of ceiling framing member(s) and lumin aire(s) shall also be permitted. Conductor insulation shall be protected from abrasion where it passes through metal. The fixtures must be installed in a manner so that water will not enter or collect in the lampholder, wireway, etc. Where raceway risers or cable is not installed within the pole, a threaded fitting or nipple shall be brazed, welded, or attached to the pole opposite the handhole for the supply connection. If the luminaire (fixture) is recessed in fire-resistant construction in a fire-resistant building, the temperature restriction is increased to 150C (302F) if the luminaire (fixture) is approved for this service. The electrical service equipment b. Pendant lampholders with permanently attached leads, where used for other than festoon wiring, shall be hung from separate stranded rubber-covered conductors that are soldered directly to the circuit conductors but suppor ted independently thereof. There are issues related to combustibles due to the heat that is generated by traditional lighting methods. Introductioin to the National Electrical Code. This restriction is not required if the luminaire (fixture) is installed in poured concrete and is approved for this use or when the luminaire (fixture) by construction design provides characterisitics that are equivalent to thermally protected characteristics, and are identified as such. These changes can be found in Article 690, Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems. Adjacent to Combustible Materials. A common problem here is that a contractor will use a particular brand of recessed can, and then trim them out with a different brand of trim; since those items were not tested together, this is a violation of the IC listing of the recessed can. I will not go into detail here, but the scope has a laundry list of items and you will find that it is pretty exclusively related to lighting products and devices. Another requirement is that track fittings are not to be equipped with general purpose receptacles, which would make them more like a branch circuit. Support. Wet and Damp Locations. Use Table 402.5 for 18-16 AWG conductors. Pendant conductors longer than 900 mm (3 ft) shall be twisted together where not cabled in a listed assembly. Refer to 310.15 or 310.60 for 14 AWG and larger conductors. Transformers shall have a secondary short-circuit current rating of not more than 150 mA if the open-circuit volt age is over 7500 volts, and not more than 300 mA if the open- circuit voltage rating is 7500 volts or less. Lampholders installed in damp locations shall be listed for damp locations or shall be listed for wet locations. You may need to comply with more stringent requirements for lights than those contained in Article 410. A metal pole shall be provided with an equipment grounding terminal as follows: A pole with a handhole shall have the equipment grounding terminal accessible from the handhole. from the sides and back of the closet walls, respectively, and continuing vertically to the closet ceiling parallel to the walls at a horizontal distance of 300 mm (12 in.) within 900 mm (3 ft.) horizontally and 2.5 m (8 ft.) vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold. As we mentioned earlier, we have a definition for closet storage space. Five exceptions exist in the 2011 Code, so please review. 410.93 Double-Pole Switched Lampholders. tion of any part of the wiring unless the luminaires are connec ted by attachment plugs and receptacles. The load calculation in 220.43(B) shall not be required to limit the length of track on a single branch circuit, and it shall not be required to limit the number of luminaires on a single track. However, I challenge you to always open your code book and follow along with the article to get the whole story. They must be installed so that any adjacent combustible material will not be subjected to a temperature higher than 90C (194F). Deleted. The clearance between the luminaire (fixture) and nearest point of storage must be 300 mm (12 in.) The switch or circuit breaker shall be located within sight from the luminaires or lamps, or it shall be permitted to be located elsewhere if it is lockable in accordance with 110.25.
